What furnace cleaning actually involves
Power goes off at the disconnect first. Gas valve closed. The burner compartment door comes off. Burners are pulled as an assembly, then brushed. Crossover ports get checked for scale and spider webbing. The flame sensor is cleaned with abrasive cloth, not sandpaper grit. Heat exchanger openings are vacuumed as far as reach allows. The blower assembly slides out. Each wheel blade is brushed by hand, because caked dust on the blades kills airflow quietly. Inducer housing, igniter, and flue connection get inspected before reassembly.
Most Houston furnaces sit horizontally in the attic. The evaporator coil and drain pan ride with them. When a pan overflows, it stains the plenum and rusts the cabinet floor. We look there before touching the burners. Blown-in cellulose and fiberglass pulled through an unsealed attic access ends up packed on the blower wheel. So do roach shells and rodent debris from attic runs.
Heating season here is short. Dust bakes off on the first cold night and the house smells scorched. That smell is usually the blower and heat exchanger surfaces, not a failure.
Cleaning will not fix a cracked heat exchanger or a rusted-through cabinet. If we find either, we say so and stop.
